Rev. Augustine A. Miller, S.J.

Rev. Augustine A. Miller, S.J. was born at Uznach on May 13, 1869 and entered the Society of Jesus at Exaten on October 1, 1887.

He studied Philosophy at Exaten and spent his regency in Cleveland. In 1898, he went to Valkenburg for theology where he was ordained in 1901.  His tertianship was spent as Socius to the Master of Novices in Cleveland after which he taught in Cleveland for two years.

Father Miller was appointed Rector of Canisius University on July 17, 1905, the first Rector after the college was joined to the Maryland-New York Province.

Some interesting items of his time as Rector:

  • 1905 -- 310 students.
  • 1907 -- 430 students.
  • 1908 -- Boarding School discontinued, - 386 students, - November 25, the Alumni commence campaign for funds to build a new college on the villa property.
  • 1909 -- 400 students.
  • 1910 -- July 2 ground broken for the new college, - 470 students.
  • 1911 -- corner-stone laid for new building, - 520 students.
  • 1913 -- January l, the complete college courses transferred from Washington Street to the Main & Jefferson property. The actual dedication of the new building took place on December 30, 1912.

After his term as Rector, he was appointed Minister to the Community at Saint Ignatius, New York City in 1913 for two years and then became a Parish Priest. In 1916 he was appointed Instructor of Tertians at Poughkeepsie.

Father Miller died at Poughkeepsie February 13, 1917.
