The Sport Administration Program presented a spring lecture series including lectures by John Allen, managing executive of the Cincinnati Reds baseball team and Richard Ensor, commissioner of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

As part of the college's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration in conjunction with the William H. Fitzpatrick Chair of Political Science Lecture Series, Canisius welcomed Rev. Bernice A. King, nationally renowned orator and author. Rev. King is the youngest child of Coretta Scott King and the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Canisius was the recipient of an $850,000 challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation for the renovation of its campus cornerstone- the Old Main classroom building. The Kresge Foundation is an independent, private foundation created by the personal gifts of Sebastian S. Kresge.
April 28
Announcement that The Hon. Jose A. Cabranes, a judge of the United States Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, and the first Puerto Rican appointed to a federal judgeship in the continental United States, will address the Canisius University Class of 1999 during commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 21 at Marine Midland Arena.
August 5
Canisius was the recipient of $174,650 over the next three years through a Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE) grant awarded by the United States Department of Education. The project will develop a curriculum that will be delivered through a "Gateways Consortium" of six universities in the European community and the United States.
August 31
The Imagine Canisius Capital Campaign reached $27.8 million with the gift of $1.275 million from Rupert Warren, philanthropist and retired president of Trico Corp., who died at the age of 90. The bequest will benefit the Eileen and Rupert Warren Scholarship Fund.
October 14
The former St. Vincent de Paul Church Rectory has been renovated and renamed George M. Martin Hall in his honor. Martin is special counsel to the president and a 1942 graduate.
November
Canisius University Press published a new coffee table book celebrating Buffalo's remarkable and diverse building designs. The book, titled Classic Buffalo, A Heritage of Distinguished Architecture, is available to the public.

The William H. Fitzpatrick Chair of Political Science Lecture Series presented "An Evening with Senator Charles Schumer".
December
According to the annual ROTC Program Performance Rankings, the Canisius University ROTC program has ranked in the top 10 percent of 270 ROTC programs nationwide.
December 7
The Frank G. Raichle Pre-Law Center and the Department of Management Computer Information Systems (MCIS) presented a lecture titled "How to Identify the Killer of JonBenet Ramsey Using Science and Computers". The lecture was in response to the high-profile murder case of JonBenet Ramsey.
December 22
Announcement of the creation of the McGowan Learning Community Scholarship Program which provides up to 20 full scholarships for students of color from Buffalo. The program is funded in part with a grant from the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund of Washington, D.C.
