Dr. Sandra P. Cookson, chair and professor of the English Department, was the recipient of a Traditional Fulbright Scholar Award. She used her award to teach American Poetry at Udmurt State University in Izhevsk, Russia.

President, Rev. Vincent Cooke, S.J. announced the Creation of the Institute for the Global Study of Religion. The Institute is an educational, research and public outreach initiative of the Religious Studies and Theology department. Dr. Timothy Wadkins will serve as director of the Institute.

The Fitzpatrick Institute appointed Natalie Photiadis ’10 and Raymond Kleinfelder ’11 as the first Institute Fellows. As Fellows, they will develop and present programs designed to raise environmental awareness and activism on campus.

Canisius University Student, Candace B. Lukasik, was awarded a Critical Language Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State. The scholarship is awarded to U.S. citizens who are undergraduate, Master's and PhD students or recent graduates.

Canisius University unveiled the “Journey of Dreams” an original oil painting created by Buffalo State College professor Lin Xia Jiang and Justin Dahl. The painting was commissioned by the Canisius University Asian American Art Committee and friends of the Multicultural Programs Advisory Board.

Canisius University welcomed Pulitzer Prize winning Polish author Alex Storozynski. His talk was co-sponsored by the Permanent Chair of Polish Culture, the Department of Modern Languages, Digital Media Arts Program and the History Department at Canisius University.

Canisius University Board of Trustees named John J. Hurley the new Canisius University President. Hurley is the first lay president in the school's history.

A replica of the Berlin Wall was built at Canisius as part of “Freedom Without Walls,” a week long program commemorating of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. The commemoration ran from Nov. 2 through Nov. 8. Canisius was one of 28 colleges across the country chosen by the Federal Republic of Germany to participate in the anniversary event.
