Canisius University junior history major, Katherine L. Fish, '10, and her sister, Lauren A. Fish, '08, participated in the University Presidential Inaugural Conference in Washington, D.C.  held during inauguration week for the 44th President of the United States.

The Richard J. Wehle School of Business Entrerpreneurs Organization welcomed  Douglas C. Pileri, Vice President for IBM Global Services, whose lecture was entitled "How to Outwit Your Global Future."

The Counseling Programs at Canisius earned national accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling Related Educational Programs.

The Canisius University Video Institute screened the documentary “Rubia en Espana.” The film follows Canisius student Erin Bagwell '09 through her study abroad semester in Oviedo, Spain.

Canisius hosted a reading and reception for Mick Cochrane's newest publication, "The Girl who Threw Butterflies." Cochrane is professor of English and Lowery Writer-In-Residence at Canisius University.

Canisius University welcomed the IU Soul Revue, part of Indiana University's African American Arts Institute.

Bernard Woma, a renowned xylophonist from Ghana performed at Canisius University as part of the African American Experience Program.

Little Theatre performed “Twelfth Night” by William Shakespeare.  Little Theatre is the theater arts club on campus.
April 1
Dr. Sandra P. Cookson, chair and professor of the English Department, was the recipient of a Traditional Fulbright Scholar Award.  She used her award to teach American Poetry at Udmurt State University in Izhevsk, Russia.

James R. Deuschle, CPA was honored with the Dr. Joseph R. Coppola ’40 Award.

Canisius University Contemporary Writer Series welcomed acclaimed fiction writer Alice McDermott.

A lecture given by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. entitled, "Our Environmental Destiny" was sponsored by the William H. Fitzpatrick Chair Lecture Series.

Timothy H. Wadkins, PhD., professor of Religious Studies and Director of the Institute for the Global Study of Religion, receives a Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation Grant to benefit Loyola High School near Chennai, India.

President, Rev. Vincent Cooke, S.J. announced the Creation of the Institute for the Global Study of Religion. The Institute is an educational, research and public outreach initiative of the Religious Studies and Theology department. Dr. Timothy Wadkins will serve as director of the Institute.

Fox News Channel’s Fred Barnes visit to Canisius University was co-sponsored by the Canisius University Republicans, The Young America's Foundation and "The Courier."

Christopher R. Lee, PhD, was a recipient of a Fulbright Hays Research Abroad Fellowship. Dr. Lee is an associate professor of Religious Studies and Theology at Canisius.

Canisius University President Fr. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J., announced he will retire from his position as president of Canisius University at the end of the 2010 school year.

The Fitzpatrick Institute appointed Natalie Photiadis ’10 and Raymond Kleinfelder ’11 as the first Institute Fellows. As Fellows, they will develop and present programs designed to raise environmental awareness and activism on campus.

Canisius University received a NCAA Grant to support Alcohol-Education Programs on Campus.  The Grant is a 3 year, $30,000 CHOICES Grant from the NCAA.

Canisius University introduced a new Masters Program in International Business beginning Fall, 2009 which will be offered through the Richard J. Wehle School of Business.

The Canisius University Board of Trustees announced the creation of a Presidential Search Committee.

Robert M. Bennett chancellor of the NYS Board of Regents addressed the Canisius University Class of 2009 at Graduate Commencement Ceremonies May 13, 2009.

The Most Rev. Robert J. Cunningham, Bishop of Ogdensburg, addressed the Canisius University Class of 2009 at the Undergraduate Commencement Ceremonies.

The Canisius Alumni Association conferred the LaSalle Medal upon Laura A. Montante Zaepfel during the undergraduate commencement ceremonies May 16, 2009.

Canisius University created the Institute for the Study of Human-Animal Relationships. Michael Noonan, PhD., will serve as Director.

Two Canisius students were awarded Fulbright Scholarships.  Myroslava Senkiv ’09 used her scholarship for a research project at the Banking Institute of Kyiv, and Amanda Schenk ’09 used her Scholarship for research in Sri Lanka.
June 10
Canisius University Student, Candace B. Lukasik, was awarded a Critical Language Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State.  The scholarship is awarded to U.S. citizens who are undergraduate, Master's and PhD students or recent graduates.

Canisius University launched three new on-line graduate programs. 1. Master of Science in Literacy Education 2. Master of Sports Administration  3. School Building Leader/School District Leader Certification Program.

The Canisius University Annual Fund Surpassed its Goal.

Canisius University announced a new major in Animal Behavior, Ecology and Conservation to be directed by Dr. Michael Noonan, Professor of Biology and Director of the Institute for The Study of Human – Animal Relationships at Canisius.

The Association for Student Affairs at Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASACCU) renamed its Young Alumni Award in honor of Dr. Sandra M. Estanek, Associate Professor of Graduate Education and Leadership at Canisius University.

Justin Young, a freshman Chemistry major at Canisius, was Awarded an Ignatian Scholarship for the 2009-10 semester.

Renowned Neurosurgeon L. Nelson Hopkins presented a lecture at Canisius University sponsored by the George E. Schreiner '43 Premedical Center Distinguished Speaker Series.

ArtsCanisius presented a Photography Exhibit by renowned Polish Art curator, Magdalena Durda-Dmitruk.

Pulitzer Prize winning historian, James M. McPherson, spoke at Canisius University under the auspices of The William H. Fitzpatrick Chair Lecture Series.  His lecture was entitled “Stretching the Constitution: Lincoln as Commander in Chief."
September 21
Canisius University unveiled the “Journey of Dreams” an original oil painting created by Buffalo State College professor Lin Xia Jiang and Justin Dahl. The painting was commissioned by the Canisius University Asian American Art Committee and friends of the Multicultural Programs Advisory Board.

Canisius University welcomed Pulitzer Prize winning Polish author Alex Storozynski. His talk was co-sponsored by the Permanent Chair of Polish Culture, the Department of Modern Languages, Digital Media Arts Program and the History Department at Canisius University.

Canisius University Board of Trustees named John J. Hurley the new Canisius University President.  Hurley is the first lay president in the school's history.

Canisius University Center for the Global Study of Religion hosted Rev. Mitch Pacwa S.J, founder and director of Ignatius Productions, as part of the Center's "Conversations in Christ & Culture" lecture Series.

November 2
A replica of the Berlin Wall was built at Canisius as part of “Freedom Without Walls,”  a week long program commemorating of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. The commemoration ran from Nov. 2 through Nov. 8. Canisius was one of 28 colleges across the country chosen by the Federal Republic of Germany to participate in the anniversary event.

“Boxcar” a Spanish language play was presented at Canisius University sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Programming.

Canisius University Center for the Global Study of Religion hosted Dolores C. Huerta, co-founder and Vice president emeritus of United Farm Workers of America as part of the Center's "Conversations in Christ & Culture" lecture Series.

The Canisius University Accounting Society hosted Aaron Beam, Jr., former Chief Financial Officer of HealthSouth whose lecture was entitled, "HealthSouth, the Wagon to Disaster."

Michael H. Wood PhD assistant professor of Physics was a recipient of a Single Investigator Cottrelle College Science Award from the Research Corp. for Science Advancement (RCSA).

Canisius University Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Scott Chadwick, announced the appointment of David E. Ewing, PhD, as the new Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
