Andrew L. Bouwhuis, SJ Library Resource Sharing Policy

Resource sharing (formerly Interlibrary loan) is the cooperative exchange of material among all types of libraries for the purpose of fulfilling the information needs of patrons. This service is available to all currently affiliated users for books, journal articles, and other materials that are not currently available at Bouwhuis library. The resource sharing department will request items from other libraries on behalf of Canisius patrons. Every effort will be made to locate items requested; however, some items may be unavailable due to scarcity, popularity, or value.

We take your research needs seriously and have established a system that expedites the receipt of materials. We are committed to processing requests in a timely manner. We cannot control how quickly other libraries respond to our requests so it may take anywhere from 1 to 10 days for journal articles to arrive. Please allow up to 2 weeks for books and other physical materials to arrive. Holidays and university closures are an exception to that timeline.

Lending libraries determine the loan period so please check your due dates. Patrons may request a renewal for a borrowed item. All renewal requests must be received no less than seven days before the due date. The lending library will determine if an item can be renewed. All material is subject to recall by the lending library.

Requesters are responsible for replacement cost and associated fees for any lost or damaged items checked out to their account.

The library will occasionally purchase an item rather than borrow it from another library. If that happens, your request will be cancelled, and you will be notified by email when the purchased copy is ready for you to pick up from the service desk.

Copyright
Bouwhuis Library complies with US Copyright Law (Title 17, United States Code) as it relates to interlibrary loan and reproduction of copyrighted material. All patrons requesting material are required to acknowledge their awareness of copyright law prior to making their first request. Under certain conditions, copyright law permits libraries and archives to make a reproduction of copyrighted material. One of the specified conditions is that the reproduction not be used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research. If a Canisius patron later uses that reproduction in excess of fair use (as spelled out in the law), the patron may be liable for copyright infringement. Please ensure you are following the Fair Use guidelines.

The Andrew L. Bouwhuis, SJ Library will not process an ILL request if it would violate copyright law to do so.
