RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is the latest technology to be used in library theft detection systems, inventory control and staff efficiency. The RFID tags not only detect unauthorized removal of library materials, but speed staff checking in and checking out of library materials, enables self-checkout, supports electronic inventorying and shelf searching, and interfaces with materials handling systems. This project began in 2013 and is expected to be completed with the installation of new RFID enabled 3M security gates as part of the renovation of the library entrance during the summer of 2015. The project includes the tagging of every book in the collection.
