What is Plagiarism?

What is plagiarism?

You may hear your professor say that you need to cite your sources to avoid plagiarism. What exactly does that mean? Canisius defines plagiarism as "intentionally or unintentionally presenting someone else’s work, ideas, or words as one’s own." This includes:

  • Directly quoting or paraphrasing ideas or information from somewhere else and not citing your source.
  • Submitting someone else's work in an attempt to pass it off as your own.
  • Using graphs, charts, or other informational graphics in your work without citing their original source.

Regardless of whether plagiarism is done by accident or intentionally, it is still a violation of academic integrity. It is your responsibility to ensure you are citing your sources properly.
