Baseball Musings - 5/7/08
You know its desperation time when you’re dreaming about your team (in my case the Pirates) already, which was the case for me Monday night. At least they won (I’ll take a rare Pirate victory any way it comes), by the unlikely score of 21-17, with Jason Bay accounting for 11 RBI, which would have tied the AL record set by Tony Lazzeri, falling one shy of the Major League record held jointly by Sunny Jim Bottomley and Mark Whiten. Even more Freudian, the Pirates were idle on Monday night, so this truly was wishful thinking. Getting back to reality, one of the feel-good stories of the young season has to be Gavin Floyd, who, for the second time in a month flirted with a no-hitter before losing it with one out in the 9th last night against the Twinkies. A former 1st round pick of the Phillies, he never panned out, as a career 6.96 ERA would attest. Part of the Freddy Garcia trade in 2006 (a major washout for both teams), Floyd went 1-5 last year in limited action for the Pale Hose, splitting time between Chicago and AAA Charlotte. As his confidence builds, you might consider picking him up in your fantasy league. You heard it here first. Its a long season, which is the beauty of it all. Until then, take two and hit to right.
