Course Reserves
The Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library provides Course Reserve services for students and faculty of Canisius College. Copies of assigned readings, supplemental readings, previous tests and other materials are available for short term loan. Materials can be checked out from the Reserve Desk located on the Main Level of the Library. Selected materials may also be available online to view or print through the Library's Web pages. Reserve lists of materials are available from CanDO, which can be accessed from the Library's Web pages.
For Students
- All materials on reserve are found in CanDO, the online catalog, and can be searched by instructor or course.
- Go to the Library's Home Page
- Click on Search Reserves by Course or Search Reserves by Instructor
- A list of instructors or course will appear
- Click on your course or instructor
- Displays course materials list
- Click on item for more detailed information
- You need the material's call number or RPF number to check out at the Reserve Desk
- Reserve books and other materials are checked out from the Reserve Desk on the Main Level.
- Reserve materials must be returned to the Reserve Desk.
- No student may check out more than two (2) pieces of Reserve materials at any one time.
- Students must have a Canisius College ID card to check out materials.
- All RPF pamphlets and reserve books are Library Use Only.
- Anyone who removes "Library Use Only" Reserve material from the Library will be charged a $10.00 penalty in addition to the regular overdue fines. Fines of $.50 per day per Reserve item are charged for overdue Reserve materials.
- A small collection of books designated as "Permanent Reserve" and circulates for use in the Library like other Library Use Only materials.
- All media materials (videos, DVDs, cassettes, records) on reserve are available at the Periodicals Desk on the Lower Level.
- Listening and viewing equipment is available in the audiovisual area of the Periodicals Department on the Lower Level..
For Faculty
- All items going on Course Reserve must be brought to the Reserve Desk in the Library.
- Call numbers, authors, and titles are required to be listed for all Library owned items put on reserve.
- The Course Reserve staff cannot retrieve materials from the library stacks for instructors.
- The Course Reserve staff cannot make photocopies of materials for instructors.
- Materials required for the start of the semester should be brought to the Reserve Desk two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
- Materials going on Reserve need to be listed on the Reserve Materials Request List form available at the Reserve Desk.
- Only one photocopy chapter of a book may be placed on course reserve. Three copies of that chapter may be placed in the folder. A scanned electronic copy may be placed on Blackboard.
- Photocopies of materials may be scanned into electronic format and made available through Blackboard as a Required Reading. The library recommends the use of durable links to make journal articles available through your Blackboard courses.
- Good quality photocopies are required.
- Documents size required is 8 1/2 x 11 with at least a 1/2" margin.
- We recommend copying one page per sheet for better viewing quality.
- During the semester we can add course reserve materials to the Course Reserve system within 2 working days.
- Library staff can assist in putting reserve materials into Blackboard.
- Online course reserve materials are password protected to ensure Canisius College complies with the fair use guidelines of the U.S. Copyright Law.
Copyright Information
It is the policy of Canisius College and the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library to comply with the applicable copyright laws and related guidelines. The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.
Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976 provides certain exceptions to the copyright holder exclusive rights. Under section 107 photocopies of copyrighted materials may be made for purposes such as teaching, scholarship, or research without infringement of copyright. Section 107 lists four factors to be considered in determining whether a particular use is fair use:
- The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
- The nature of the copyright work;
- The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
- The effect of the use upon potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
Copyright Guidelines
- Instructors are responsible for fair use of copyrighted reserve materials.
- No more than one chapter from a book can be placed on Reserve.
- Photocopies of copyrighted articles cannot remain on Reserve for more than one semester without written permission from the copyright owner(s).
- All copied materials should contain a complete citation and notice of copyright.
- Permission from the copyright holder is required if the item is to be reused in a subsequent semester for the same course offered by the same instructor, or if the item is a standard assigned or optional reading for an individual course taught in multiple sections by many instructors.
- All reserve materials will be returned to the instructor at the end of each semester.

- Lecture notes
- Student papers (with permission from student)
- Government publications
- One article from a journal issue (spontaneous use and NOT core material)
- One chapter from a book (spontaneous use and NOT core material)
