Circulation PoliciesTo Borrow Library MaterialsA borrower must have a Canisius College ID card or be a registered student, staff or faculty member with a picture ID to charge out library materials. ID cards are non-transferable. Students should report lost ID cards to the Library immediately to prevent unauthorized use of their cards. Students not reporting lost or stolen I.D. cards are responsible for uses made on the card.
Loan PeriodsMost books (except Reference and Reserve books, periodical materials and other designated materials) may be charged out for four weeks and may be renewed once for an additional four weeks. All books are due before the end of the semester. The Library considers the last day of exam week to be the end of the semester. Books charged out fewer than four weeks before the semester ends are also due by the end of the semester. Library matrials that are not overdue may be renewed online, by phone, or in person at the Circulation Desk. Students enrolled in the Honors Program may borrow books for the entire semester. These students must request the whole semester loan at the time the book is charged out. Honors Students will be assessed fines if they keep four week loan books out for t he whole semester. RecallsMaterials needed for Reserve will be recalled even if the four week loan period has not expired. Failure to return the material within 7 days will result in a fine of $.50 per day. A book charged to a faculty member or administrator, which has been out for four weeks may be recalled if someone else needs it. The normal faculty/administrator loan period is six months. Reserve MaterialsThe Reserve Desk is located on the Main Level of the Library. Professors place books and other materials on Reserve for their students to use. Loan periods vary and are set by the professors.
Many reserve materials are available online at cando.canisius.edu. PeriodicalsMagazines and newspapers are located on the Lower Level of the Library. These materials may NOT be removed from that floor. There are copy machines on the Lower Level of the Library for making copies. More information about Periodicals Department policies are here. Returning Library MaterialsMaterials may be returned when the Library is closed via the outside book drop. Reserve and Periodical materials should be returned to their respective desks. If these desks are closed, all materials must be returned to the Main Level Circulation Desk. Borrower's RightsThe Library will neither disclose the names of any borrowers nor devulge any information regarding items loaned to specific individuals. FinesFines on regular circulating books are $.10 per day, per book. If fewer than three weeks overdue, these fines are cut in half if paid when the books are returned. Fines on overdue Reserve materials are $.50 per day, per piece of material. There is a replacement charge on all lost or unreturned books; in addition, there is a $10.00 processing fee. If you pay for a lost book and then the original is found, you will only be reimbursed the book cost. The processing fee is non-refundable. If you lost a book before it is due, it is wise to notify the Library. If you return a book for which you have been billed, you will only be liable for the fines. Delinquency ProceduresThe Bursar sends the names of students no longer registered with the College to a collection agency. Current students' charges are added to their tuition bills and become part of their total financial obligation to the College. Former Canisius students who have library delinquencies will not have their transcripts released to other colleges or graduate schools until the delinquency has been paid in full. A LIBRARY OBLIGATION WILL RESULT IN A HOLD BEING PLACED ON A STUDENT'S REGISTRATION, DROP-AND-ADD AND TRANSCRIPTS. Students with delinquent College financial obligations cannot borrow laptop computers. Loan LimitThere is no stated limit on the number of books a student may borrow at one time. The Library does, however, reserve the right to limit the number of books a student borrows if it appears that other students' needs are not being met. The date on which a book is due back is usually stamped in the back of the book. Failure on the Library's part to stamp a book does not relieve students of the obligation to return books on time. You may check your circulation record on the Library's web page at cando.canisius.edu/patroninfo As a courtesy, an overdue notice is sent starting when the book is one week overdue. A student who does not receive an overdue notice for an overdue book is still liable for any fines and/or replacement. Overdue notices are sent by email to Canisius College accounts. Students are responsible for notifying the Library of any changes in their addresses. Alumni
